If you’ve spent any time on Forever 50 Wellness, you already know I’m passionate about healthy aging, hormone optimization, and doing everything I can to support my body from the inside out.
I’m 62 years old, but my recent biological age testing showed I’m aging closer to 50. While there’s no magic anti-aging pill, I believe the right lifestyle, hormones, nutrition, and supplementation can make a meaningful difference in how we age.
One supplement I made an intentional change with was DHEA.
I originally took 7-Keto DHEA because it’s often promoted for metabolism and weight management. But over time, I realized my goals were bigger than just metabolic support. I wanted to focus more on hormone optimization, energy, recovery, muscle maintenance, and overall vitality.
That’s what led me to switch to regular DHEA.
What Is DHEA?
DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is a hormone naturally produced by your adrenal glands. It serves as a precursor to two major hormones: estrogen and testosterone.
In simple terms, DHEA helps your body create other hormones that play essential roles in:
Energy
Mood
Libido
Muscle maintenance
Recovery
Bone health
Overall vitality
The challenge is that DHEA production naturally declines as we age.
By the time many women reach menopause and beyond, DHEA levels can be significantly lower than they were in younger years.
That decline may contribute to feeling:
More fatigued
Less motivated
Weaker in the gym
Slower to recover
Less interested in intimacy
More “flat” overall
Many women chalk this up to “just aging,” but hormones often play a major role.
Why I Switched from 7-Keto DHEA
The biggest reason I switched comes down to one important difference.
7-Keto DHEA does not convert into active hormones.
Regular DHEA can convert into:
Testosterone
Estrogen
That mattered to me.
7-Keto may still be helpful for metabolism and thermogenesis, but since I’m focused on aging well, preserving muscle, and supporting hormone balance, regular DHEA made more sense for my goals.
I wanted support for:
Lean muscle preservation
Energy
Recovery
Hormonal balance
Healthy libido
Strength and vitality
Regular DHEA fit better into my overall wellness strategy.
Why DHEA Matters After 50
After 50, maintaining hormone balance becomes increasingly important.
This isn’t just about vanity or appearance.
Hormones affect how we feel every single day.
You can eat well, exercise consistently, and take all the supplements in the world—but if hormones are off, everything feels harder.
That’s one reason I pay so much attention to hormone optimization.
Properly monitored DHEA support may help support:
Better energy
Improved mood
Healthy libido
Lean muscle retention
Exercise recovery
Healthy aging
My Personal Experience
For me, DHEA is part of a bigger picture.
I don’t believe one supplement changes everything.
Instead, I believe small, consistent actions compound over time.
DHEA works alongside:
Strength training
High-protein nutrition
Sleep optimization
Hormone therapy
Recovery practices
Stress management
That combination helps support the way I want to age.
Who Might Benefit?
You may want to discuss DHEA with your healthcare provider if you’re experiencing:
Low energy
Reduced motivation
Loss of muscle tone
Decreased libido
Menopause-related changes
General decline in vitality
Lab testing can help determine whether DHEA support makes sense.
Final Thoughts
Forever 50 isn’t about pretending we’re 25.
It’s about giving our bodies what they need to stay strong, vibrant, and resilient.
That’s why DHEA remains part of my wellness routine.
Because aging is inevitable…
But how we age is something we can influence.
